●Origin
The ritual of the gods cleansing the harbor begins in the lantern festival each year. Sponsored by the Pao-an Temple at Yeliou, the temple will invite the gods in the temple as, Sagely King Kaizhang, Sagely Mother in the Heaven, Lord Chou Chang, and Tu Ti Kung (
Earth God ) to the harbor and perform the rituals of "cleansing the harbor" and "Passing over fire on land."

●Activities
In the ritual, the temple workers will put the gods' statues on sedan chairs, which are carried by four strong men. First, they will tour around the village. Then, as if the sedan chairs are incarnated by the gods, they swing at all sides crazily. Suddenly, the carriers will jump into the sea with the sedan chairs and swim to the other side of the harbor some 100m away. After they go ashore, they will conduct the "passing over fire" ceremony. Such kind of folk ritual of "coming from the sea and getting into the fire" is the rarest in temple parade in Taiwan.

Simply, harbor cleansing ritual attempts to clean away the dirt in the fishing harbor with the power of gods. In addition, the people also plead for smooth fishing trips and for full load of fishes whenever they go fishing. Meanwhile, passing over fire is also a kind of cleansing ritual. During the ritual, first, the Taoist will clean temple. Then, he will carry the charms and spells, blowing the horns, to conduct the ceremony of opening the fire road. To lower the temperature of the fire, he will sprinkle rice and salt on it. When the good fortune hour comes, the carriers of the gods' sedan chairs will step on and walk across the fire. At last, the followers, both men and women, will walk over the fire after the gods. People believe that if the gods will have their power augmented when walking over the fire. For the followers, if they walk over the fire, they can have the gods blessing for good health. It is said that the ashes left in the ceremony also works miraculously. If people boil water with the ashes and drink it, the whole family will be protected by the gods.
